It started simple. Ride the gravel roads of southern Minnesota, see what happens. What happened was the Almanzo 100. It was one of the first gravel races in the country, launched in 2007 out of Rochester. Paper cue sheets, chalk start lines. It grew from 13 riders to over 1,400, stayed free-to-enter, and helped set the template for a genre.

Almost all of it lives as a memory. Intentionally.
